 My story

I remember how hard it can be to carry so much while still showing up like everything is okay. As a former collegiate athlete, I understand the pressure to appear strong while struggling beneath the surface. That experience, along with telling my own story in a healing space led me to this work. I’m passionate about supporting children, teens, and young adults as they learn more about themselves, their emotions, and their relationships.

Hi there! My name is Jamie Nelson, and I am a California registered associate professional clinical counselor (APCC #21037) practicing under the supervision of Ashley Hudson (LMFT #83507).

Where it all began...

Life can look “together” on the outside while feeling overwhelming, heavy, or unclear on the inside. You might be used to pushing through, staying strong, or holding things in, even when something doesn’t feel quite right. Maybe stress has started to build, emotions feel harder to manage, or you’ve noticed a growing disconnect from yourself or others. Therapy offers a place to slow down, make sense of what you’re carrying, and begin to understand your experiences with greater clarity and self-awareness.

I earned my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Concordia University Irvine and have worked in school, nonprofit, residential, and private practice settings. Across these experiences, I’ve developed a deep passion for helping individuals navigate the impact of trauma and relationship challenges, especially when things feel confusing or hard to put into words. My priority is to create a space where you feel heard and can come as you are throughout our time together.

As a former collegiate athlete, I’m familiar with the pressure to perform, stay strong, and push through even when things feel overwhelming. That lived experience shapes how I show up in the therapy room: with empathy, steadiness, and an awareness of how often people minimize or hide their emotional pain. I enjoy working with athletes to help them manage stress so they can not only perform, but also genuinely enjoy their sport. I also work with former athletes navigating life beyond competition, supporting them as they integrate their athlete identity with the other parts of who they are.

In my work with diverse populations, I’ve noticed that grief often weaves itself into people’s stories in both obvious and subtle ways. Because of this, I’m passionate about supporting individuals as they navigate grief and significant loss. This might look like grieving unmet needs from childhood, the reality of life not unfolding as hoped, the end of a meaningful relationship, or the death of a loved one, as well as the many in-between losses that can be just as impactful. I strive to create a space where your grief is honored and it can be explored gently and at your pace.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and relational, rooted in the belief that meaningful change happens within a trusting therapeutic relationship where you feel seen and accepted. I work from a Psychodynamic framework and draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, and Attachment Therapy. In sessions, we’ll explore patterns from past relationships and experiences, along with present thoughts, emotions, and coping strategies in ways that feel aligned with your goals.

My clients appreciate my warmth, honesty, and  ability to gently challenge when needed. I am a Christian and welcome integrating faith into our work if that’s something you desire, in a way that honors your beliefs, questions, and doubts.

Reaching out for support can feel like a big and tender step. Wherever you’re starting from, I’ll be with you in it. If you’re feeling ready to begin therapy, connect with our intake coordinator today to schedule your first appointment.

OFFERING IN-PERSON & TELEHEALTH THERAPY

Taking the step to start therapy can feel like a lot, especially at the beginning. I honor the courage it takes to reach out and look forward to coming alongside you in this step toward healing and growth. My office in Yorba Linda is designed to feel inviting and cozy so you can feel comfortable showing up as you are. In addition to in-person therapy in Orange County, I offer online therapy throughout California for those who prefer the flexibility of meeting from home. Online sessions can make therapy more accessible and reduce the stress of commuting and scheduling. Whether we meet in person or online, I’m here to walk with you through it.
